EA added Snoop Dogg as a playable character and reviewer for NHL 20 simply because developers and publishers have expressed interest in bringing celebrity reviewers to the game in the future. NHL itself introduced Snoop Dogg in a rich ice hockey instructional video provided in 2018, so Snoop Dogg can now be a guest commentator in NHL 20.
Snoop's addition to the game was teased ahead of the update drop. The rapper, who tends to be in the booth to record music, was in the booth to record electric hockey commentary instead. Snoop D-O-double-G always brings a little something extra when he's invited to broadcast live sporting events and from what the teaser shows, he did not disappoint when it comes to "NHL 20."
“Prepare for some Gino and Juice as Snoop Dogg arrives in EA Sports’ NHL 20. Yes, you read that correctly. Starting today, players can hear Snoop Dogg’s dulcet tones emanating from the broadcast booth as Snoop joins NHL 20 as a guest commentator. The D O Double G is also available as a playable character in ONES Offline, Squad Battles and World of Chel, and players who take on his Featured Squad in HUT will be able to unlock his exclusive jersey.”
Snoop Dogg took to Twitter to announce his addition to NHL 20, saying, "Ice hockey really be lit now with me in the booth!!" Based on the announcement trailer, Snoop won't be your traditional announcer and will bring some of his uniqueness to the game.
This isn't Snoop's first time handling broadcast duties, as he recently helped call a Los Angeles Kings game, in addition to some play-by-play during a Spurs vs Lakers game last month. Not only does Snoop have experience in the broadcast booth but he also has a history of teaming up with EA Sports. The DoggFather had already been added to Madden 20's "Superstar KO" mode as a wide receiver, joining the likes of other hip-hop stars such as DJ Khaled and Lil Yachty, both of whom can be used as QBs.
Snoop Dogg showing up for NHL 20 may be a bit surprising, considering he ended 2017 by deciding to put EA Sports on blast in a rather hilarious Instagram rant. In the rant, he compared EA’s servers to Los Angeles’ infamous 405 freeway, which is mostly known for being clogged all the time. Snoop doesn’t seem to tolerate any sort of downtime when it comes to servers. In 2016 he made an equally hilarious message to Bill Gates demanding that Bill help Microsoft get the Xbox Live servers back up, or else he was going to switch to a PlayStation 4. The real question now is if Snoop will tolerate having to wait in the penalty box (and if he ever actually switched to that PS4!).
