Dribbling in Rocket League is effective movement control in one versus one matches, it also is an almost compulsory mechanic. Professionals in the community use this mechanic regularly to manoeuvre the ball around, over, or sometimes even underneath an opponent (or multiple).
How do I Dribble?
For me, I gained a lot of dribbling skill by putting on a podcast (or music) and spending an hour a day in free play dribbling the ball.
Make a training pack where the ball Is like halfway to the ceiling on one side of the field and so it just falls to the floor. Then put a timer on it for like 5 seconds. Catch the ball on your car and try to keep it up. The timer will run out and if the ball touches the floor it will go poof and disappear. Just reset it like 5000 times until you can drive around without it touching the floor. It will take you a long time. Don’t burn yourself out on it if you feel that you are getting irritated stop and do something else. 10 or 15 minutes a session for a few weeks and you will be able to do it.
Tip: look at the white circle on the floor not at the ball so much. Try to use slightly slower turns not short jerky ones because the short jerky ones will bounce the ball around on your roof. Also feather the boost and acceleration just do short taps not long presses. Try to avoid using the reverse as a brake at first if you do that too much you may get into bad habits like I did and it will make it harder for you to learn how to carry the ball really fast later on.
Here is an example of dribbling a moving ball:
In addition, start practicing it with a car like the dominus or the breakout. Dont do it with the octane at first because the octane is much harder to keep the ball up with. Use a flat car to practice matching the speed of the ball first, and then when you can drive straight pretty good, switch to the octane/your car of choice and then practice doing turns at 45 degrees and using drift to do 90 degree and sharper turns. After a couple weeks of 15 minute sessions you will literally be able to keep the ball up and drive around the whole pitch for as long as you want. Then it's just faster and faster and doing flicks.
Two things that a lot of people new to dribbling do is go too fast try turning when the ball isn't on the side of the car. The first is self-explanitory, trying to dribble and control it whilst going fast is incredibly difficult, so slow it down, feather the throttle and only tap boost when you need to. Avoid brakes at all costs.
The second is more directed at your problem. If you want to control the ball to the left or right, the ball has to be directly on the side of your car, mid-way between the front and back. As you turn it'll begin to lift off the ground and roll up to your roof - do this too suddenly and you'll cut underneath it, do it too gentle and you won't be turning. It's just a matter of practice, for instance, when you begin dribbling you can't take your eyes of that white circle, once you've learnt, it's second nature. It's the same for controlling - just keep doing it and it'll eventually click.
