In the upcoming Rise of Azshara Update, Warcraft developer is introducing a new type of equipment called Benthic gear, which can be upgradable to near Heroic-raid level with “Prismatic Manapearls”, a king of currency earned while adventuring in the naga domain of Nazjatar.

 
New Benthic Gearing System Overview
 
As you explore Nazjatar, you’ll collect Prismatic Manapearls—soulbound currency you can spend to purchase Benthic tokens and upgrades. These bind-to-account tokens can be used to gain a piece of upgradable Benthic gear specific to your armor type (cloth, leather, mail, plate), starting at item level 385. With enough time and effort, players can dedicate their hard-earned Manapearls to upgrade pieces to ilvl 425, just shy of Heroic-level raid gear (ilvl 430).
 
Similar to past catch-up systems, Benthic gear tokens can be purchased for a zone-specific currency ( Prismatic Manapearl), or acquired through other means in the zone like Nazjatar World Quests. The basic token provides a piece of gear for returning players, which is fairly easy to upgrade to LFR-quality loot, and takes considerably more effort to upgrade to Heroic-quality loot.
 
Unlike the Timeless Isle system, Benthic gear comes with pre-determined secondary stats, removing an element of RNG. The Benthic Gear is also more interesting than Timeless Isle gear as it offers many unique equips. Some provide combat benefits while others have exploration perks.

Each piece of Benthic gear boasts a thematic bonus that applies in Nazjatar and the upcoming Azshara’s Eternal Palace raid. These bonuses might provide effects that boost your damage, slow down your foes, or even increase your mount speed while adventuring through this perilous region. Customize your character with up to six unique bonuses. Put together pieces to create a powerful set for combat, collect a set optimized for exploration, or mix and match to have the best from both worlds. Additionally, each piece has predetermined secondary stats which allow you to have more control over your character’s build.

 
Benthic Gear Tokens
 
Benthic items, starting at ilvl 385, are sold by vendors in your Nazjatar faction hub--Finder Palta for the Horde and Artisan Itanu for the Alliance. These tokens cover the eight major armor slots, as well as cloaks. Trinkets, rings, and weapons are not covered by Benthic gear, but these slots have interesting systems in Mechagon, the other new zone in Patch 8.2.
 
Each token costs 5 Prismatic Manapearl.

Benthic Item Equips
 
Benthic items have unique equips and predetermined secondary stats. Some equips provide combat benefits in Nazjatar and the Eternal Palace, while other provide exploration benefits.
 
Upgrading Benthic Items
 
We covered the nascent Benthic system in early datamining, but now we have more details on the upgrade system:
Azsharan Pearling Kit, sold for 20 Prismatic Manapearl, empowers a Benthic item to ilvl 400. This new version of the item is called Pearled.
Azsharan Pearling Enhancement, sold for 10 Prismatic Manapearl, increases the ilvl of a Pearled item by 5, up to ilvl 430.
Azsharan Azerite Pearling Enhancement, sold for 30  Prismatic Manapearl, increase the ilvl of a Pearled Azerite item (Helm, Shoulders, Chest) by 15, up to ilvl 430.
The end result is a Pearled ilvl 430 item, equivalent to heroic loot from the Azshara's Eternal Palace raid. While it only takes 20  Prismatic Manapearl to upgrade an item from 385 to 400, it will take 30  Prismatic Manapearl to upgrade it from 400 to 415.
 
All of these upgrade items are Bind on Account.
