Fallout 76 Patch 9 introduces Bethesda a big feature -
Pioneer Scouts. The Pioneer Scouts were originally an organisation for children to help improve their communities. Anybody can join the Scouts regardless of age. Players can even join their ranks by finding a poster at an Appalachia Train Station, or by placing a poster in your C.A.M.P.
A new series of events following the adventures of the Pioneer Scouts is now available, where players will be able to progress through the ranks in order to earn crafting recipes and gear. The scouting related events are described as ranging from activities to minor quests to spooky campfire stories.
Upon reaching the rank of Possum (you start as a Tadpole), players will be able to craft their first backpacks, which increased how much gear they can carry. Backpacks will also serve as cosmetic items which can be modded to change their appearance. Some mods are also more functional, such as increased damage reduction or food refrigeration. All in all, it seems like a neat way to expand gear and build selection options outside of the Perk system that's in place.
Players will be able to sell excess items and materials at their C.A.M.Ps via player vending machines. The currency for them are
badges, so if you'll complete every tadpole challenge you'll have enough tokens to buy everything from that machine, the same with other scouts.
The default method of earning scout badges is to do every tadpole challenge. There are totally 13 challenges.
However, the high capacity mod and refrigeration mod are 16 badges. So, how to obtain the badges? Don’t worry. Just go back to Treadly every day at 8pm, Dolly Sods and do the bug quest. It resets and gives you a possum badge.
In addition to the challenges, there’s a new "Campfire Tales" event or called “Terrors of the Dark” which will reward you with Possum Badges occasionally. Out of five attempts, I got a single possum badge as a reward twice. To start this event, all you have to do is go to Camp Adams, west of the Giant Teapot, and server hop there until the event pops up. It appears there between sunset and sunrise, from what I can tell, so sometimes there will be daylight when it pops up.
As with world badge challenges, the easiest ones are probably Athlete, Herpatologist, and Hunter. The challenges for these can be found under the "Challenges" Tab in your menu, under the "World" section and will be labeled as this: "Scout: Hunter" as an example.
Each of the "Scout" world challenges will require you to complete an exam, which can be found in the scout pioneer camp in the building to the right of the Mr. Handy scout leader that initially recruits you to the scouts.
