Junk is something which you won't ever miss while playing Fallout 4 and enjoying your long trip to Boston's wasteland. If you have ever played the game, you’re going to come across a lot of it during your time. Here’s how to scrap items in Fallout 76.
Scrapping junk items will let you break down items into essential crafting materials like wood, steel, glass, etc. You’re going to need lots of these materials, so it’s a good idea to pick up as much of this as you can and then scrap it all. Don’t worry about holding onto anything as the actual materials and resources are what you need, not the junk.
The first type of junk we’ll cover is the rusted cars, metal, trees, and other assorted useless things that take up space in your settlements. You can easily get rid of most of this (though you can only get rid of certain buildings) by opening up the build menu via the Workshop or View button, and then by pressing R (or the applicable console button) to scrap it. You’ll be given a short list of the items you receive from it, and the items will go directly into your Workshop’s inventory.
All junk items consist of one or more components that can be acquired from scrapping junk at any workbench. Because components weight less than junk, it is recommended to scrap junk often to prevent becoming over encumbered. The scrap all junk option available at work benches will scrap all junk items in the player character's inventory automatically, save for items which are used as ingredients for making something else, such as baseballs. Bulking Aluminum and Lead can save 0.5 and 1 weight respectively, so it is recommended to bulk them if you are saving a lot for later use.
Essentially you want to use the junk for its parts. If you look at an item in your Pip-Boy you should see what resources it will break down into. For example, a teddy bear might break down into some cloth, and a cooking pot will give you some steel and copper. All of these things will be useful when you go about building up your settlements, so you’ll want to gather a ton of junk to be used for this.
You can also Make Raw Materials out Of Junk, Step 1: Go to your base, find the workshop, and use the 'Transfer' option. Step 2: Look on the button legend at the bottom of the screen and press the button that takes all junk out of the workshop and puts it in your inventory. Step 3: Exit the workshop and enjoy being over encumbered! Step 4: Find a large flat surface inside your base (demolished houses work well for this). Step 5: Open your Pip Boy and go to Inventory > Junk. Step 6: Drop every piece of junk in your inventory on the floor (this bit takes a while). Step 7: Once you've dropped everything, activate the workshop mode so you can dismantle stuff. Step 8: Dismantle all of your junk which is now on the floor.
