Early Look at Fallout Patch 9: New Pioneer Scouts Faction and The New Backpack System
Bethesda revealed a couple of interesting new bits of info regarding the upcoming Wild Appalachia update for Fallout 76.
Patch 9 is the next upcoming game update for Fallout 76, which will be launching across all platforms on the 7th of May, and will introduce a new faction to the game known as the Pioneer Scouts, as well as the new Backpack system.
The patch is titled Ever Upwards, a mantra of Appalachia's Pioneer Scouts. The Pioneer Scouts have seen their numbers--both in terms of new recruits and veteran members--dwindle due to the Great War's effects. As such, anyone and everyone willing to help their cause can join. To become a Pioneer Scout, players should check out train stations.
The Pioneer Scouts is a former kids organization that is accepting any new recruits who don’t mind starting at the rank of Tadpole and working their way toward Possum. Since the Great War, their numbers have dwindled, though, so now anybody can join the Scouts regardless of age. Players can even join their ranks by finding a poster at an Appalachia Train Station, or by placing a poster in your C.A.M.P.
Those who join the Pioneer Scouts can complete challenges--such as archery, cooking, swimming, and more--to earn badges. These badges can be exchanged at Pioneer Scout vending machines for C.A.M.P. items and various other loot. The reward for players who reach Possum rank is tougher badges and their first backpack.
The Backpack not only increases carrying capacity (yay) but also can be modded to provide more armor protection or food-preserving refrigeration. They can be customized to suit your outfit and modded to improve their usefulness, such as increasing their carrying capacity, adding armor plating to protect against damage, or adding a refrigeration unit to keep food for longer. Each backpack mod can be applied to all types of craftable backpacks.
In addition, Bethesda also teases a Pioneer Scouts feature called Terrors of the Dark; “Listening to spooky stories around the glow of a campfire is time-honoured Pioneer Scout tradition,”they explain; “Head to Camp Adams after nightfall to hear about the Terrors of the Dark. Listen closely, but be sure to look over your shoulder for any real creepy creatures that may be lurking in the shadows.”
Patch 9 will arrive on May 7th. Bethesda promises to introduce more of its features beforehand, so stay tuned for

Bethesda released the first wave of Wild Appalachia content back in March and decided to split the game into Adventure and Survival modes just a couple of weeks later.
Earlier this month, Fallout 76 got a pretty beefy new patch that introduced a new Wild Appalachia questline along with a smaller update that added the controversial Repair Kit consumable to the Atomic Shop.
In the meantime, there’s a double XP event for both Adventure and Survival modes, kicking off today at 9pm PT/ 12pm ET/ 5pm BST and wrapping up on April 29 at 3am PT/ 6am ET/ 11am BST.
